A stylish guide to summer, shade and the art of slowing down
There is a particular kind of heat on the Côte d’Azur.
Not unpleasant, exactly. Rather, it is the sort of heat that encourages you to abandon your plans, order another cold drink and reconsider whether anything truly needs to happen before sunset.
In high summer, the Riviera shimmers. The Mediterranean turns an extraordinary shade of blue, the hills smell of pine and wild herbs, and the cicadas provide a soundtrack from morning until dusk.
The secret is not to escape the heat entirely.
It is to embrace the slower rhythm it imposes.
From early-morning swims and long lunches to shaded village terraces and secret corners in the hills, here are a few of our favourite ways to experience the Côte d’Azur when the mercury rises.
Start with the sea
There is no better antidote to a Riviera afternoon than the Mediterranean itself.
For the most beautiful experience, forget the beach clubs for a morning and get on the water early, when the sea is calm and the coastline is still wonderfully quiet.
A private boat allows you to discover the Riviera from a different perspective — the red rocks of the Esterel, the coves around Cap d’Antibes or the islands just beyond the coast.
Drop anchor somewhere secluded.
Swim.
Snorkel.
Stay for lunch.
There is something wonderfully civilised about spending the hottest hours of the day floating in the Mediterranean with nothing more pressing on the agenda than deciding whether to have another glass of chilled rosé.
Want to spend the day on the water? Let Bespoke Villa Management arrange it for you. From finding the right yacht and crew to creating a tailor-made day along the coast, we can take care of the details — you simply step aboard.
Discover the luxury of shade
The old villages of the Côte d’Azur were not designed for air-conditioning.
They didn’t need it.
Stone houses, narrow lanes, vaulted passages and shaded squares create naturally cooler spaces, particularly in the historic hilltop villages.
Explore Mougins in the morning before the heat settles in, wander through the medieval streets of Saint-Paul-de-Vence, or simply find a quiet terrace beneath an ancient plane tree.
Order a coffee.
Watch the world go by.
There is an art to doing very little in France, and summer is the perfect time to practise it.
Make lunch the main event
On the Côte d’Azur, lunch has always been more than a meal.
It is a pause in the day.
When temperatures rise, seek out a beautiful shaded terrace and allow yourself several hours. Think local fish, tomatoes at their summer best, a classic salade niçoise, fresh fruit and something chilled from Provence.
The point is not to rush.
In fact, rushing through lunch on a summer afternoon in the South of France rather misses the point.
Take your time. The afternoon will still be there.
And if you would rather someone else found the perfect table? Bespoke Villa Management can recommend and arrange restaurants to suit your mood, from an elegant shaded terrace to a hidden local favourite. Tell us what you are looking for and we will take care of the rest.
Head for the hills
One of the Riviera’s great pleasures is how quickly the landscape changes.
Leave the coast behind and the temperature often drops as you climb into the hills. Pine forests replace beach umbrellas, mountain streams replace swimming pools and the pace becomes noticeably quieter.
The Gorges du Loup makes a particularly refreshing escape, with dramatic scenery and natural water spots tucked into the landscape.
Pack a simple picnic, wear something comfortable and bring swimming shoes.
You may return sandy from the coast, but you’ll return considerably cooler.
Prefer to have the day planned for you? Bespoke Villa Management can help arrange a private excursion into the hills, from a leisurely countryside lunch to a day exploring the cooler landscapes beyond the coast.
Retreat to your own pool
There is, of course, another solution.
Stay home.
A private villa pool has a particular appeal in the height of summer. There is no timetable, no crowded sun terrace and no reason whatsoever to leave the water.
The most luxurious approach is to follow the natural rhythm of the day.
Swim early.
Have lunch in the shade.
Retreat indoors during the hottest hours.
Return to the pool in the late afternoon, when the light becomes softer and the heat begins to lift.
Perhaps pour something cold, put the phone away and open a book.
This is the Côte d’Azur at its most effortless.
And if your villa needs a little help becoming the perfect summer retreat, that’s where we come in. From arranging poolside lunches and private chefs to organising housekeeping, shopping and those little details that make a villa feel effortlessly cared for, Bespoke Villa Management is here to make your stay exactly that — effortless.
Go underground
Sometimes the most elegant escape from the sun is simply to disappear beneath it.
The hills and countryside around the Riviera are home to caves and cool subterranean spaces where temperatures remain pleasantly removed from the heat above.
Exploring them offers a welcome change of pace — and a reminder that Provence has far more to discover than its coastline.
Emerging into the afternoon sunshine afterwards feels almost like arriving somewhere new.
Wait for sunset
There is no rule that says a Riviera summer must be lived entirely during daylight hours.
In fact, some of the most beautiful moments arrive after the sun begins to disappear.
Take an evening swim when the pool is quiet and the air has softened. Swim beneath the first stars, dry off slowly and dress for dinner outdoors.
As evening falls, the hills begin to glow and the coastline lights up in the distance.
Then comes dinner beneath the olive trees, candles flickering on the table and the faint sound of cicadas continuing somewhere beyond the garden.
This is when the Côte d’Azur feels almost cinematic.
Looking for somewhere special for dinner? Contact Bespoke Villa Management and let us find the table worth staying up for. Whether you want sophisticated Riviera dining, a discreet village restaurant or somewhere with a spectacular view, we can arrange it.
And sometimes, do nothing
Perhaps the most sophisticated way to survive a Riviera summer is also the simplest.
Do less.
Open the shutters early and let the morning light in. Take a swim before breakfast. Read beneath an olive tree. Have a long lunch. Sleep through the hottest part of the afternoon.
Let the day stretch.
There is no need to see every village, visit every beach or tick every attraction off a list.
The Côte d’Azur rewards those who slow down enough to notice it: the scent of lavender and rosemary in the heat, the sound of cicadas in the trees, the coolness of stone beneath bare feet and the way the sea changes colour towards evening.
The art of staying cool
The Riviera has never really been about rushing.
It is about knowing when to swim, when to retreat into the shade and when to pour another glass of something chilled.
So when summer temperatures rise, don’t fight them.
Slow down. Find the shade. Get in the sea. Head for the hills. Stay for sunset.
And if you would rather leave the organising to someone else, Bespoke Villa Management is here to make it happen.
A yacht for the day.
A table beneath the plane trees.
A private chef waiting at the villa.
A last-minute restaurant reservation.
A beautifully planned day when you don’t want to plan anything at all.
Tell us what you feel like doing — we’ll take care of the rest.
Because on the Côte d’Azur, true luxury isn’t having more to do.
It’s having nothing you need to do yourself.
